Only when your website provides value to its visitors, will your website be able to produce the results you desire.
So how do you determine the value that your website should provide to its visitors?
It's really not that hard, take a look at your existing customers / clients and ask yourself:
- What am I already doing to attract customers to my business?
Now you need to translate that to the customers point of view and get that onto your website.
Pick
the top 3 to 5 customer / client types of your business. Pick the types
who spend the most with your business. Write a short profile for each of these customer types. Keep it to a paragraph or two and try to really get into their heads as you write.
Now
that you have an understanding of your most important customers, its
time to work out what they want from your website. Take at least one
task that each of your customer / client types would use your website
for and describe it in detail.
Now
plan the workflow for each of these tasks from the Home page of your
website through to the action you want them to take. This action could
be to buy products, download information, phone you, leave their
contact details or just enjoy your website.
Now
you have a plan, put it into action. For each of your featured tasks,
ensure that the starting point is immediately obvious on your Home page.
When people land on your home page, particularly from a search engine, they decide within a few seconds whether your site has something to offer them - so make sure it's obvious.
